The Burlington Area School District (BASD) administrators are making plans on how to best utilize the $3.5 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) III provided by the federal government.
So far plans for the third round of ESSER funds are to use them chiefly to increase staffing and make up learning lost to the pandemic. To do this, officials plan to add a few short-term instructional coaches to supplement math and reading instruction at both the elementary and secondary levels.
Additional support for students learning to speak English by hiring a translator and more English language learner’s staff is being sought as well.
Another area where the district wishes to spend money is in seeing to it that all students have a chance to utilize the internet at home. BASD wishes to spend $42,000 for internet hotspots so that students can experience a reliable internet connection in order to access resources and assignments from home. It is estimated that 14 percent of students need this access.
A flyer printing service can be instrumental in explaining public institution’s spending.
Other things on the BASD wish list include new furniture for several elementary classrooms as well as a one-of-a-kind piece of equipment – a 3D cadaver table, costing $100,000 for the district’s thriving anatomy and physiology program.
The district will be seeking feedback from the community on the ESSER III budget with plans for release in early January, and district analysis results in February.
