Library explores fun side of science

The Baraboo Public Library recently hosted a spring break series designed to help children develop an interest in science.

The Curiosity Academy provided space for 16 kids to learn more about engineering, technology, math, and science while taking part in a series of fun activities. A total of 16 young people from grades two to five met for two hours each day during the March school break. According to the library’s teen specialist, the participants not only perform the experiments and activities, they learn the scientific principles behind them. Many used ordinary materials that can be found around the house, which was intended to encourage a sense of discovery.

The activities included creating lava bottles, exploding toothpaste, making homemade ice cream, using a printing press, and Lego Mindstorm kits. One of the children who took part noted that she was learning that science was not boring. A stationery printing form can help to add to the educational value of the series by producing instruction and information sheets, coloring pages, experiment record sheets, and anything else that may be required.

The funding for the week of learning came from a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart. At the conclusion of the series, the kids had a chance to show off what they have learned in the Curiosity Academy Showcase. Their experiments and projects were put on display for the public to see.
