What's Happening in Baraboo, WI…

Baraboo Riverwalk extension agreed

Thanks to a recent agreement, Baraboo Riverwalk will soon be increased in length.

The Wisconsin Historical Society recently reached an agreement with the city to

extend the trail around Spirit Point, which is a peninsula of land that is under the ownership of the Society. The city has been attempting to lengthen the walking path so that it connects to the Maxwell-Potter Conservancy in its south-eastern section.

The proposal for the new extension involves expanding the trail that goes along Water Street, creating a footbridge river crossing, following the shoreline at Spirit Point and then re-joining Riverwalk at Manchester Street. A print company can produce signage for use along walking trails such as this that includes maps of the routs and information about points of interest along the way.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department plans on applying to the state for a grant to begin the work in 2017 or 2018. The city would be responsible for the care and maintenance of the site for the next 25 years. A representative for the city noted that the annual Baraboo River Rendezvous would not be not be affected by the new pathway.

The Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, Mike Hardy, noted that the city feels ready to undertake the project and that it shouldn’t create too much of an additional workload for its staff.
