Two-part Olympia workshop to explore eco-friendly landscaping

Many people may not realize just how much of an impact their landscaping choices can have on the natural environment, and an Olympia initiative will work to change that

A two-part workshop, going ahead at the time of writing, will help Olympia residents learn how they can make decisions about their property that will benefit both them and the local environment. They will discover how they can protect area waterways when they garden, all while choosing plants and other elements that will attract birds and other wildlife.

The first class will introduce the attendees to plants that are attractive to native wildlife, and they will discover how they can create shelter and other habitat for these visitors. They will also find out how they can reduce their lawn area while creating diverse plantings. Drainage issues will be discussed, as will ways property owners can stretch their landscaping budget.

The second class will explore plant selection in more depth, and this will include small breakout groups that will give the individuals learners a chance to discuss their own landscaping issues. Both sessions are free, but preregistration is mandatory. A printing services company can supply Copies of handouts and other materials for this sort of event.

The first of these environmentally friendly landscaping classes will be held on April 28, and the second has been planned for May 5. Both will be offered at 2000 Lakeridge Drive.
