Native Americans who were Lushootseed speakers, including members of the Chehalis, Puyallup, and Nisqually tribes, were the earliest inhabitants of the area that became Olympia, Washington. The first Europeans in the area were members of the expedition led by Peter Puget, for whom Puget Sound is named. In 1851, the city became the site of the Customs District of Puget Sound and the customs house, by U.S. Congressional action.
