Olympia and the surrounding area offers many opportunities for enjoying nature, and a schedule of events will bring the public to a variety of these sites.
The Estuarium has plans in the works for a series of outings that will visit the wetlands located on the Olympia Port Peninsula. Birds including waterfowl, raptors, and passerines may all be spotted, although the species seen will depend upon the season.
The spring and summer schedule of outings will begin with a visit to the LOTT wetlands, and from there, the participants will head to the trails along East Bay. Swantown Marina will boast a family of ospreys, and the excursion will wrap up with a stop at Percival Landing, where the group will discuss urban birds and how they have adapted to their environment.
During the fall, the walks will follow a different route, offering time at Heritage Park and 5th Avenue Dam as well as some other sites. No experience of bird spotting is required. Organized outings offer a chance for those who are new to the hobby to get their feet wet, and a brochure printing company will be able to supply printed species checklists and ID guides, as well as promotional Pens for the participants.
Puget Sound Estuarium has made arrangements to host its Bird Walks on the fourth Sunday in February (which will be February 27), April, June, August, and October. Its Eventbrite listing offer more information, as well as details about the meetup location for the registrants.
