One of the tasks of a public information officer (PIO) is to speak with the press and conduct news conferences, and doing so does not always come naturally. A one-day workshop has been planned that can help, and it will be taking place in Olympia this December.
The participants in the seminar will discover ways that they can approach the podium sounding polished, knowledgeable, and ready to answer questions. They will also find ways of handling the stress of this sort of situation, and the learning will include both hands on and lecture components.
The topics on the syllabus for the function include how to organize a news conference and how to be prepared for the types of questions media representatives tend to ask. They will also address what to do when addressing the media in an emergency, and each student will be able to do some mock interviews and receive feedback to help them improve.
This learning opportunity is being presented by the Washington Emergency Public Information Network, and along with the training, the delegates will have a chance to meet and mingle with their colleagues. Promotional Products and other swag for a workshop like this are available at area Print shops.
Olympia’s Thurston County Emergency Management offices will offer the PIO Training workshop on December 18. There is no registration fee being charged.
