Olympia area gets inside scoop on tool sharpening

Keeping knives and scissors sharp can be an important step in kitchen safety, and an Olympia area workshop will teach techniques for doing so.

Lacey MakerSpace offers a variety of learning opportunities, and it will be running an Intro to Tool Sharpening workshop in mid-April. It is for those who are age 12 and up only, and everyone who attends is reminded to bring a non-serrated knife or a pair of scissors they would like to sharpen.

The participants in the day will be taught how to use the Tormek tool sharpener, and they will learn how to create a precision edge. Doing so safely will be emphasized throughout the session, and everyone will receive maintenance tips to keep their tools in top shape. The event’s official listing explained that sharpening advanced tools, such as axes and chisels, will be covered in a future workshop, and the timing for this will be announced at a later date.

The makerspace movement gives the public access to both technology and learning sessions. Copies of handouts, safety waivers and other custom documents can be prepared for an activity by Stationery printers.

Lacey MakerSpace has scheduled this introduction to the art and science of sharpening on April 13. It will start at 10:00 am, and both members and non-members alike are welcome to participate. The class fee starts at $69.92.
