City of Olympia buzzing about its new residents

A special transport of 30,000 visitors recently arrived at the state capitol in Olympia, and it is expected that they will stay there for some time.

These tiny guests are a swarm of European honeybees. They were set up in two new hives on the grass on the grounds of the Governor’s mansion by apiarists from the Olympia Beekeepers Association. The number of bees has been declining in the city, and the hope is that they will help to make the public more aware of the importance of these small yet vital creatures.

Beekeepers who are members of the association will be in charge of looking after the hives. They will start out small, but as the number of bees increases, extra Boxes will be added to them to help them store any extra honey produced.

Laurie Pyne, who is the president of the beekeepers group, remarked that healthy colonies of bees and other pollinators are essential to maintaining the food supply, and people really do depend on the vital role they play in the world. She went on to say that as much as 80% of the food people eat depends on pollinators. Brochures that contain further details about the situation can be provided to the public.

The honeybees are to become a permanent fixture on the grounds of the capitol, and should they become established, honey could be produced as soon as next year.
