Kazu Kibuishi, creator of the “Amulet” graphic novels, will appear in Lacey soon, courtesy of the Lacey Loves to Read program
Lacey Loves to Read is a joint program of the City of Lacey, the Lacey
Timberland Library, the Lacey South Sound Chamber, and North Thurston
Public Schools. The program is designed to get young people interested
in reading and focuses on works that appeal to people of all
generations.
Kibuishi started his series of graphic novels - there are now eight - and he's working on the ninth, with “The Stonekeeper”. The novels are science fiction/fantasy, and the main characters are Emily and Navin, brother and sister. In “The Stonekeeper”, after their father's death, they and their mother move into her deceased great-grandfather's house, where their mother is lured into the basement. The children follow and find themselves in a world full of talking animals, demons, and a robot rabbit.
Kibuishi will talk about his Books and how he creates them, but he's also a big fan of homework, and plans to discuss that as well. He believes that if a young person is fascinated by a particular subject, they'll want to study it, and he encourages that. He says he hopes children understand that the subjects they're offered in school can have a direct impact on their future. Events like this are even more fun if organizers use poster printing to replicate book covers.
Kibuishi will appear February 21, from 7.00 pm until 8.30 pm, at River Ridge High School in Lacey.
