Noted author to visit Lacey

A notable children’s book author will visit Lacey soon to share thoughts on reading and writing.

“Lacey Loves to Read” is a reading initiative for the community that is designed to encourage a discussion with an author, who meets with participants to discuss the writing process. The initiative is the work of the Lacey South Sound Chamber, the City of Lacey, the Lacey Timberland Library, and North Thurston Public Schools, and is free of charge.

The featured author this year is Donna Barba Higuera. She has won numerous awards including the Newbery Medal. Among other Books, Higuera has written “Lupe Wong Won’t Dance” and “The Last Cuentista.” In describing her writing process, Higuera says that it goes beyond pen and paper, or sitting at her computer. Sometimes she imagines a story, which she sees as if it were a movie playing in her head. Her advice for other writers is to do whatever works for them, and ignore advice that says there is a “proper” way to write.

She says Neil Gaiman, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Octavia Butler are some of her favorite writers.

Higuera, a California native, is now a resident of Washington State where she lives with two frogs, two dogs, and her family. She will be at the North Thurston Koval Center for Performing Arts in Lacey on February 15. Organizers of events like this will often use flyer printing to create handouts for attendees.
