A class scheduled for Lacey will teach participants life-saving techniques.
The Visiting Angels will provide personalized training in AED, First Aid, and CPR. Those who complete the class will earn three Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The class will comprise four hours of training, using both video and hands-on measures to teach life-saving techniques. Among the skills to be taught are bandaging injuries and making sure they are secure; care of someone who is choking; compressions; and the use of an AED.
AEDs are becoming more common. The initials stand for Automated External Defibrillator and the device is used in cases of sudden cardiac arrest. During such an event, the heart is not beating normally, but is in Ventricular Tachycardia (“V-Tach”) or Ventricular Fibrillation (“V-Fib”). The AED is used to administer an electrical shock to the heart. Many people think the AED will restart the heart, but the opposite is true—the AED stops the heart. The procedure is like turning off a computer and rebooting the system. Since the shock could be transmitted to anyone touching the patient, potentially also stopping their hearts, learning how to use the device properly is mandatory.
Every participant will be given an EMS CPR/1st Aid certification, which is good for two years. They also have access to the EMS website.
The class is January 22, from 9.00 am until 1.00 pm at Visiting Angels Lacey on Lacey Boulevard. Organizers of events like this can use brochure printing to create Brochures for class participants.
