What's Happening in Lacey, WA…

A vocalist described as a “diva of the highest order” will perform in the Lacey area soon.

Mavis Staples will appear in Olympia, a short drive from Lacey, for an event that should get the new year off to a great start. Staples got her start singing with her family as The Staples Singers. Their hits include “Respect Yourself” and “I’ll Take You There.” In 1999, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2017, she was honored with her induction into the Blues Hall of Fame.

The Chicago native began singing with her family in 1950. At first, the group performed mostly at local churches, and once a week on a radio show. After Mavis graduated from high school, The Staples Singers took to the road, becoming one of the most influential gospel groups in the United States.

Staples began to work as a soloist in the late 1960s, and has recorded with a number of musicians including Bob Dylan, Prince, and Ray Charles. A review of a recent concert reveals Staples as a generous performer who shared the stage with other singers/songwriters, and revealed a huge emotional and narrative range—and note-perfect renditions of her best-known songs.

Mavis Staples will appear at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts on Washington Street in Olympia, only a few miles from Lacey. The show is scheduled for January 11 from 7:30 pm until 9:30 pm. Flyer printing can be used to provide programs for events like this.
