Members of the Lacey City Council recently announced the formation of the Lacey Youth Council, and is now looking for young people to serve on the new legislative body.
The youth council will have seven members, who will be given the chance to take part in the process of government, as they are mentored by city leaders. Officials hope that by giving Lacey’s young people an opportunity to lead, and take an active part in local activities, they will be inspired to become leaders themselves. Officials could use flyer printing to create a handout summarizing the aims of the new council.
Potential members should be from 16 to 18 years of age; those who are younger have to have had their 16th birthday by September 1. They should be attending one of the North Thurston Public Schools (NTPS) as a senior, junior, or sophomore. If they are not in the public schools, they are still eligible if they are being homeschooled, or if they are attending a private school; in both cases the school must be in Lacey’s Urban Growth Area, or Lacey proper.
The applicants must also be residents of Lacey’s Urban Growth Area, or Lacey, and have the time and inclination to attend a monthly meeting, which will require preparation. The city council will confirm the appointments, and those chosen will serve for 10 months, starting in September. Applications are available at NTPS high schools, the city hall, and online.
