Lacey to plant seeds in tree-mendous celebration

Lacey has been named a ‘Tree City USA’ for 28 years in a row, and will celebrate that anniversary soon by giving away seedlings. The city has decided to name April as ‘Arbor Month’, and hopes this will encourage businesses and residents alike to plant trees, and care for them.

Lacey first received the Tree City honor from the Arbor Day Foundation early in the 1990s, and since then, has spent over $7.5m planting and caring for its trees. The city has also distributed 33,000 seedlings to residents, free of charge.

There are almost 6,000 trees lining the city's boulevards and roads, all of which are maintained by the city. Lacey also has over 1,200 acres of open space and public parks, making the system one of the largest such municipal park facilities in the South Puget Sound area. The city has also preserved large tracts of natural forests permanently.

In order to celebrate its beloved trees, Lacey is giving more seedlings away as part of the celebration. The seedling giveaway, an annual event, will take place at Huntamer Park on Saturday, April 13, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm, or until all the seedlings are gone. This year, the species available include Colorado blue spruce, sugar maple, river birch, eastern redbud, and white dogwood. Officials hosting events like this can use banner printing to decorate the venue and add to the fun.
