Scott Spence, Lacey's city manager, recently announced that the city offered the position of Chief of Police to Ken Semko, and he has accepted. Chief Semko follows Chief Dusty Pierpoint, who spent 33 years on the Lacey police force and retired back in October.
The search for Chief Pierpoint’s replacement was a nationwide effort that ultimately found Chief Semko in Santa Monica, California. Semko has 27 years' experience in Santa Monica, where he joined the force in 1991. He climbed the ranks steadily, finally serving as interim chief. In California, Semko oversaw a department with 214 sworn officers out of a total of 450 personnel. In Lacey, he will lead 52 officers in a department with a total of 64 personnel. Santa Monica's budget for law enforcement was $90 million biennially, while Lacey's is about $10 million.
Spence said that he found Semko's credentials as a law enforcement professional both impressive and comprehensive, and he is confident Semko's mix of education and experience make him the right choice to head the Lacey police.
