Lacey festival to embrace diversity

Lacey has a festival coming up that will make it easy to learn about other cultures.

The City of Lacey Parks, Culture & Recreation department is organizing the upcoming Lacey Cultural Celebration, which is an annual event. A collection of 18 performing groups will be on hand to present music and dance that represents their home cultures and countries.

Among the participants are the River Ridge Taiko Ensemble drummers; the Hula Halau ‘O keala’akua Naniloa dancers; the India South Sound Association promoting the culture of East India, and the Haley Prendergast Irish Dancers.

Performers have spoken of relishing the experience as much as festival attendees do. John Theine, the River Ridge Taiko Ensemble’s band leader, says it gives him an opportunity to engage with members of the community. New groups will be appearing this year, so even long-time festival visitors will have something new to see.

In addition to the performers, there will be vendors available with products from around the world, and food purveyors will offer tastes of their home cultures. Kids will be able to collect “Stamps” from various booths to paste into “passports” as they play the “Passport Game.”

The Cultural Celebration will take place on Saturday, March 9, from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm at Saint Martin’s University. The event is free. Organizers of this sort of event will often use flyer printing to create handouts with a list of performances and times.
