What's Happening in Lacey, WA…

A day is approaching that honors a great American and gives people an opportunity to give back to their communities.

Lacey is hosting a “Day of Service” on the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King. The day is both a federal holiday, and a chance for people to follow his example by serving their communities. In Lacey, this Day of Service takes the form of a cleanup of Woodland Creek Community Park. The park covers 72 acres and has picnic areas, BBQ grills, a playground, Long’s Pond, and well-maintained, paved trails. A disc golf course is also located in the park, which has proved to be a pleasant spot to watch geese and other wildlife.

Typically, cleaning up a public space such as this includes removing invasive species, picking up trash, pulling weeds, and generally making the park tidy.

In creating Martin Luther King Day, Congress also designed it a “national day of service,” encouraging citizens to take part in an activity that will have a positive impact on their community. This could be anything from donating to a charitable group to delivering meals to the elderly.

The Day of Service will be January 16, beginning at 10.00 am. The park is at 6729 Pacific Avenue SE in Lacey. When organizers set up events like these, they can use banner printing to create sturdy, outdoor signage directing volunteers to the location of the activity.
