The beginning
The first people in the Lacey area were members of the Nisqually and Squaxon tribes; the first European settlers were Catherine and Isaac Wood, who settled here in 1853 and gave their name to the town, which was called Woodland. It was not until 1891 that the community had grown to the point where it could apply for a post office, yet the request was at first not granted because a Woodland already existed elsewhere. The town reapplied, this time using the name Lacey, allegedly after the local Justice of the Peace, O.C. Lacey, though the origin is uncertain. The government agreed, and Lacey finally had its post office. The community, however, wasn't incorporated until 1966.
While Lacey is comparatively young, its history is a long one, and is preserved in the Lacey Museum, which collects artifacts, documents, photos, and even stories about the region and its development. Lacey today
Lacey nowadays is in part a commuter town, providing housing for people who work in Olympia or Fort Lewis, and to a lesser extent, Tacoma.
