What's Happening in Lacey, WA…

A comedian who finds fun and joy in a sensitive subject—aging—is coming to Lacey.

Susan Rice is a native of Longview, Washington, who began doing stand-up after college. That was in 1983 and now, in her 70s, she is still going strong. She credits her success, in part, to the fact that stand-up comedy was just rolling out across the country, and she was one of the first comedians to take advantage of its growing popularity. She and many other Portland comedians got their start at the Leaky Roof, located in Goose Hollow.

In 1986, Rice relocated to Los Angeles, hoping to find work on TV specials and sitcoms. Although she did appear on several cable comedy shows, she never appeared on a sitcom. She returned to Portland, where she began to build a career that has lasted for 41 years, and won her acclaim as one of the funniest people in the city.

Her nickname is “Funny Old Bag,” and her age is one of her favorite subjects. She jokes about AARP, about being grateful she can still climb up the steps to the stage, and how she once found herself running at a speed dating event—but he got away. She is warm, genuine, and relatable, and delights her audiences.

Susan Rice will be at Ricardo’s in Lacey on November 8. When they plan events like this, organizers might work with a printer, who will use brochure printing to create a program.
