Upcoming performances announced by Issaquah theater

The Village Theatre, which has facilities in both Issaquah and Everett, has announced its 2017-2018 season.

The shows on tap are the Sondheim musical ‘Into the Woods’, Disney show ‘Newsies’, the classic ‘The Gin Game’, a new work entitled ‘String’, and the cult favorite ‘Hairspray’.

Steve Tomkins, the theater's artistic director, said the choice of plays offers a number of challenges to the company, but he is sure audience members will be happy. The company now has a base of 20,000 subscribers in Everett and Issaquah number. Only 10 companies in the National Alliance for Musical Theater can report attendance on that scale.

Brian Yorkey, a Pulitzer prize and Tony award winner, has been assigned to direct ‘Into the Woods’, while artistic director Tomkins will handle ‘Newsies’, based on the eponymous Disney film. Tompkins will also be at the helm for ‘Hairspray’, while ‘The Gin Game’, which won the Pulitzer in 1978, will be directed by Jeff Steitzer.

Brandon Ivie has been tapped to direct ‘String’, a new musical that explores the ancient Greek myth of the Moirae, also known as the Fates—three goddesses who spin the string of life. After angering Zeus, the three find themselves trapped in a modern-day setting.

‘Into the Woods’ opens the season on October 27, 2017, and ‘Hairspray’ ends the season on July 29, 2018.

Theaters like this can benefit by working with poster printing companies to create placards to advertise the productions.
