Just in time for Halloween, the Issaquah History Museums have planned a spooky outing.
People interested in local history should consider putting aside their fears, wrapping up warmly, grabbing their flashlights, and attending an upcoming tour of the Hillside Cemetery in Issaquah. The tour will be led by Erica Maniez, who is the director of the Museums. She will be sharing stories about the cemetery, and what it was like to live in a small town like Issaquah during the early 20th Century. She will also have information about some of the people who now rest in Hillside.
Burials first took place at Hillside in 1890, when the cemetery was used by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). Later in its history, the IOOF deeded the cemetery to the City of Issaquah, and today, almost 4,000 people are buried at this site. Many of the deceased lived long, healthy lives, leaving their descendants to remember them, but others fell victim to Issaquah’s dangerous conditions as a mining town before the 20th Century.
The tour is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. However, the number of participants is limited to 20, so interested parties should buy tickets as soon as they can. Professional flyer printing can be used to create handouts for this type of event.
