The City of Issaquah recently updated its Water System Plan, the first time it has made any changes to the plan since 2012.
The purpose of such a plan is to describe in detail the capacity a water utility provides, and its operations and policies. The plan also describes the water sources that exist, and shows how both current and future needs will be met and conform to the law. Additionally, it provides a mechanism for devising a Capital Improvement Plan that prioritizes all construction projects needed to maintain the water system, and allow for its growth.
The plan was updated to include capital projects planned for the future, including the possibility of locating a water treatment facility in Issaquah. Staff members told the city council that data about water usage and supply were used to develop the forecast for water demand in the future. Future capital projects are evaluated in light of that demand. With that in mind, staffers say a main finding of the plan is the need for more groundwater treatment. Regional water supplies will be combined with the groundwater to meet future demand.
Once the plan is approved, discussions about the new treatment plant will begin. The updated plan is good for 10 years. Officials could use brochure printing to create materials updating residents about this development.
