The Village Theatre in Issaquah is bringing in the holiday season with the high-energy musical ‘Disney's Newsies’.
The stage production is based on the movie, which was released in 1992, and which in turn was based on an actual event—the strike in 1899 by newsboys in New York City.
‘Newsies’ will be one of the final productions the theater will mount with Steve Tomkins as its artistic director, as he recently announced his plans to retire on May 31, 2018. Tomkins came to the Village Theatre in 1987, when he choreographed ‘West Side Story’. The following year, he directed ‘Gypsy’ on the Mainstage. By the time the current season ends, Tomkins will have 64 Mainstage productions to his credit, often as both director and choreographer.
With regard to ‘Newsies’, Tomkins says the Village Theatre's production seeks to honor both the Broadway show and the film while still putting its own spin on the play. He says Katy Tabb has choreographed dance scenes with precision, delivering high-caliber work that will be exciting for the audience. Beyond the dances, Tomkins says the costumes, music, cast, and set—which resembles a jungle gym—will make this a memorable evening for patrons.
‘Newsies’ opens this Friday, November 10, and runs through December 31 in Issaquah then it moves to the theater’s location in Everett, Washington.
