The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is planning to add auxiliary lanes to Interstate 90, and Issaquah will fund up to $3m towards the development.
The project will add additional lanes from 5220 Northwest Sammamish road to Southeast 51st Street. WSDOT also plans to construct a retaining wall on Northwest Sammamish Road, and will give the city the right-of-way if Issaquah decides to widen the road again in future. Officials in charge of projects like this can use poster printing to create directional Signs for drivers.
Sheldon Lynne, the city's director of public works, said the retaining wall has to be built in order to support the hillside while the lanes are constructed. At the moment, the city lacks the funds to start work on Northwest Sammamish Road immediately, Lynne said. He added the city council is looking for ways to fund the work.
The WSDOT project in Issaquah will facilitate traffic movement between Eastgate and Issaquah on I-90, and is part of the program known as Connecting Washington. The auxiliary lanes that are planned with increase the capacity of the highway in both directions.
According to a report prepared by city council staffers, WSDOT would take money from the funds provided by the city only if the cost of the project exceeds the maximum budget of the agency. WSDOT requested funds from Issaquah in January.
