For the fourth year, the Issaquah Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a concert to support the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank.
The program features the Moldau, by Smetana; Georges Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1; the Hoe-Down from Rodeo by Aaron Copland; the Fingal’s Cave Overture by Felix Mendelssohn; and Aleksandr Glazunov’s Concerto in E flat major for alto saxophone. The soloist is Duane Bowen. Events like this can be even more enjoyable if organizers use banner printing to decorate the venue.
The orchestra was started in 2000 by Duane Bowen and Joyce Cunningham, who established a “reading orchestra” to have some fun. The original ensemble has since become a nonprofit community group that is still playing for fun. Bowen is the conductor, and says that members of the orchestra range in age from 92 down to middle school. The wide range gives a representative sample of the community.
The concerts to raise food began in 2016, when the orchestra turned the last performance of the year into a “food raiser concert.” In order to support the food bank, the orchestra would like to invite members of the community to donate items that will help the organization fight hunger this summer. Since the effort started, the orchestra has collected 3,667lb of food.
The concert is set for May 20, at Skyline High School, beginning at 7:30 pm. Admission is free.
