The Issaquah School District is revisiting the proposal to set the start of school later in the morning for teenagers.
Over 10 years ago, the school district engaged in a study that invested the logistics and complexities of changing the school day, but the recommendation was to make no changes. The Seattle Public Schools tried a few years later as well, but also gave up on the idea.
Recently, however, scientific studies by the American Academy of Pediatrics support the idea that both middle and high school should start at the earliest at 8:30 am so that teenagers could get the sleep that they need.
The Issaquah School District is also considering the change. A district spokeswoman said that many parents and members of the community have been bringing up the issue and may have looked to local Print companies to print materials showing their support of the change.
The proposal would be to begin school at 9:00 am for high school students, instead of the current 7:25 am, and to end at 3:55 pm instead of the current 2:16 pm. The start time for middle school would be 9:15 am and ending at 3:35 pm, and elementary schools would start at 8:00 am and end at 2:25 pm.
Parents, staff and community residents will be able to have their say on the proposal some time later this month.
