Construction has begun on the Gateway apartments in downtown Issaquah.
Any existing structures on the property located between Interstate 90 and Newport Way Northwest have been demolished, and temporary construction fencing has been put in place. Clearing and grading will also take place, and pouring of the concrete foundation will occur once permits are approved by the city.
There will be 18 separate buildings of between two and five stories in height, which will provide 400 new residential units. A central common building and underground parking will be available too.
A land-use review is also being carried out for the related Gateway Senior Housing project, to be located also on Newport Way Northwest. This project will have one building with 146 apartment units for seniors. There would be one level of underground parking with 32 spaces and an additional 78 surface parking spaces.
The two projects have raised some concerns about traffic along Newport Way from locals. The city has conducted traffic impact analysis studies for the two sites, which are on the city’s website and available in hard copy, perhaps thanks to the efforts of a local Print company.
The main Gateway subdivision would add 2,650 new car trips during the weekday, while the Gateway senior project would add 468 new car trips in total. There would be a total of 240 new trips during the morning rush hour between both projects, and 281 new car trips in the evening.
