Issaquah is planning a party for local residents to celebrate Earth Day.
The Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (FISH) are inviting people to spend some time with the Chinook salmon, before the juveniles are released. The fish will start their journey in May, so FISH thinks Earth Day is the perfect time to wish them good-bye.
Visitors to the hatchery will be able to tour a garden of native plants, feed rainbow trout, and take part in arts and crafts activities with a salmon theme. There are 4.5 million Chinook smolts (an intermediate stage in the salmon life cycle) at the hatchery, where they can be found in rearing ponds.
Experts will be on hand to answer questions about the salmon, and everyone will have a chance to write a note to the salmon, wishing them good luck for when they are released.
Visitors who would like to assist with projects to help habitat restoration will also have a chance to get their hands dirty.
FISH will give demonstrations and will have information available about science camps available this summer, as well as in-class educational programs. There are guided tours available year around, and the FISHop Gift Shop will be open for the occasion.
The event will take place on Saturday, April 20 from 12.00pm until 4.00pm at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery, located at 125 W. Sunset Way.
Organizers of educational events like this will often use flyer printing to create factual handouts for visitors.
