Comedian to raise a laugh in Issaquah

A comedian who was named “Portland’s Funniest Person” in 2015 will let Issaquah in on the fun.

Susan Rice and her “Smokin’ Jokes” will be coming to Stan's Bar-B-Q in North Issaquah. Rice has an extensive resume that includes 35 years performing stand-up. She has toured the country with some of comedy’s greats including Paula Poundstone, George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld, Arsenio Hall, and George Lopez. She has appeared in “Portlandia,” and on ABC, Showtime, and HBO. Rice began her career in 1983, when a stand-up comedy scene started in New York and spread to other regions of the country.

Rice’s appearance is deceptive. With gray, curly hair and red-rimmed glasses, audiences often expect a stern lecture of some sort. Instead, they may hear some surprisingly raunchy material, and this confounding of expectations tends to add to the humor.

She launches into a routine based on her accurate “read” of the room, and never singles anyone out or makes anyone uncomfortable—unless they indicate they are okay with being part of the fun. The idea is that people come away from one of Rice’s shows with the feeling they have just spent some time with an old friend.

Susan Rice will be appearing February 17. Stan’s Bar-B-Q is at 58 Front Street. Events like this can be promoted when organizers use poster printing to create colorful advertising.
