PenMet to carry 2022s budget into 2023

The Peninsula Metropolitan Park District’s budget for 2023 will look very similar to 2022’s, with a large portion of the funds for this year being carried into the next.

The district had a budget of $34.5m for 2022, from which $29.2 million will be carried over to the next financial year, according to comments made by the staff during a public hearing held in Gig Harbor. Most of that money is coming from what was budgeted for a community recreation center.

Ally Bujacich, the Executive Director, stated:

“The CRC (community recreation center) is a good example of a project that is funded over multiple years. We started funding this project in 2019 or 2020. We’re working at aggregating multiple years to reach that funding.”

The total bill for the CRC project is approximately $31.6m, and this does not include the $4.3 million used to purchase the land for development. Sketches integrating graphic design show what the community recreation center will look like, and have been produced and shared with the public.

Phase I of the project is set to be completed early in 2023. In this phase, the existing building will be renovated and will be used as a community space, and PenMet’s headquarters will be located here. The demolition of the tee box is almost complete, and the contractors are currently working on the interiors. The second phase will concentrate on building the sports fields.
