The city of Gig Harbor is soliciting feedback from the public for a new Climate Action Plan as part of its efforts to address climate change.
A Climate Action Plan (CAP) is an approach to lower greenhouse gas emissions and cope with current and potential future effects of weather and climate. Apart from readying residents for climate-induced changes, a city's CAP can also decelerate the progress of these changes by executing measures to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. CAPs aid in gauging and monitoring the community's local greenhouse gas emissions. Flyer printing, using recyclable materials, can be used to educate people about climate change.
Despite Washington having a state-wide CAP, a city-level plan is essential for Gig Harbor to become more resistant to climate change. In fact, the city has prioritized this plan since the start of last year by including it as a goal in its two-year strategic plan for 2022-2023, with an aim to "tackle climate change" and "implement a climate and sustainability action plan."
Last July, the city was granted funding by the Washington State Department of Commerce to undertake three climate change projects. The first involves conducting educational and outreach sessions with the Climate Change Comprehensive Plan Amendment Committee. The second project aims to adopt an amendment that integrates climate change into Gig Harbor's Comprehensive Plan. The third is to develope a CAP before the grant's mid-June deadline.
