Gig Harbor residents looking for a physical challenge to kick off the new year can find it at the local Polar Bear Plunge event. The event will take place at a local camp.
Traditionally, a Polar Bear Plunge is an event that takes place on New Year’s Day. Participants in the event will strip to their bathing suits and jump into a body of water, like a pond, a lake, the sea, or even a bathtub. Due to the event taking place in January, their body of water of choice is likely to be freezing cold.
The reasons that people participate in this event are various. Some people say that it causes a pleasurable spike in adrenaline, while others believe that performing the event has health benefits. Polar Bear Plunges are also often undertaken to raise money for different charities.
The purpose of the Gig Harbor event, it seems, is for participants to challenge themselves. This can be inferred by fact that a ‘badge of courage’ will be offered to participants who successfully take the plunge. It will take place at the YMCA Camp Seymour, which is located at 9725 Cramer Road KPN, starting at 10:00 am. A lifeguard will be present and reservations include access to showers and changing rooms.
