Construction underway for $31.6M rec center

Peninsula Metropolitan Parks secured an additional $1 million in state funding to aid in the construction of the Community Recreation Center in Gig Harbor.

The $1 million will be allocated from the Washington State Legislature's $8.9 billion capital budget. The PenMet board initially authorized the project in 2021 with a $31.6 million construction budget.

The budget of $31.6 million will include direct construction costs and other expenses such as sales tax, furnishings, fixtures, design fees, and permit fees. The rest of the project's funding comes from the capital project fund to the tune of $11.6 million, bonds that raised $16 million, a capital campaign that was able to raise $3.1 million, and government grants worth $900,000. Reports on how funding was raised for projects like this is likely to feature the organization's letterhead on it.

The developers have put out a press release that said:

“The design provides a campus-like environment with two buildings complementing each other across a multi-use grass area that is sized to accommodate a youth soccer field.”

Phase one of the project will involve repurposing the former golf pro shop building into PenMet Parks' administrative headquarters and providing additional space for community programs.

The first phase has already begun, and the renovations are projected to be completed this year. The next phase entails the expansion of the Cushman Trail, the construction of an indoor recreation center, and the renovation of the miniature golf course.
