City seeks funding for development projects

The city of Gig Harbor will be asking the state for help with funding for several projects.

Works in need of assistance include the new sports complex, and road improvements on Borgen Boulevard and Wollechet Drive in order to reduce traffic congestion. The city will also be putting in a request for funds to conduct a study on waterfront climate resiliency. Requests like these tend to have official Letterheads on them.

The sports complex will require $2m in order to complete Phase 1B of construction, which includes putting up the bocce ball and pickleball courts, an event lawn, a playground, parking lots, a sheltered performance stage and covered picnic areas. However, the state only has a budget of $2m for the whole of the 26th District, as city staff learned at the start of the year. According to Gig Harbor Now, administrator Katrina Knutson said state lawmakers indicated it would be “a stretch” to give the full allocation to these projects, but did appear to be receptive to the cause.

The sports complex could still proceed even if the request for additional funding is denied, as the city had already put aside $5.2m for the project in the 2023-24 budget and it has money from other sources, including $500,000 in grant money from the Recreation and Conservation Grant, $200,000 from state appropriation, and some from the general fund.
