There are many ways for the average person to become a citizen scientist, and one planned for the Federal Way area will do a good turn for the feathered members of the community.
The Christmas Bird Count is an activity that takes place in communities all across North America, and Audubon Society Chapters often host this activity. This one will be organized by the Rainier chapter, and its listing pointed out that it will follow the format used in previous years.
Local birders who would like to get involved can choose to observe “in the field” or at home, and the data collected will be used to determine the overall health of a variety of bird species as well as the general environment. Those who choose to make their observations as part of a team will be led by a Field Leader, and the location will be provided to the registrants.
At the end of the “in the field’ count, the participant will be invited to linger and mingle over a potluck supper while the counts are tallied. Stationery printers can prepare wildlife survey packages for an event that include species checklists, tally sheets, basic identification guides, and promotional Pens.
The Rainier Audubon Society has made arrangements to run its 2022 Christmas Bird Count on December 18. The final date to sign up for a survey team is December 4, and more details about both this activity and the at-home version is available online.
