Horticulturists, gardeners, and Rhododendron lovers have an event to look forward to this spring, even if the format is slightly different this year.
Federal Way is home to the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden (RSBG), a 22-acre site that shelters the world's largest collection of Rhododendron species. The Rhododendrons flower amid a forest that includes hemlock, western red cedar, Douglas fir, and other plants native to the area. Companion plants to the Rhododendron are also found in the garden, including Japanese maples, magnolias, camellias, Himalayan blue poppies, and more. Many of the plants are rare.
The garden held its first Rhododendron Species Symposium in 2016. The two-day event brought gardeners, horticulturists, and people who simply love Rhododendrons together to listen to information about the species, as well as how various new species were discovered. The first symposium also included tours of the garden, along with meetings with staff and other attendees.
The latest symposium is still in the planning stages, but it has been decided that the 2021 event will be virtual. Organizers of events like this sometimes work with Print shops to create discussion materials and mail them to registered participants in advance of the event.
The dates for the Rhododendron Species Symposium are April 26 and 27, from noon until 8.00pm on the 26th, and from 8.00am until 10.00pm on the 27th.
