Everett residents will soon be hearing the click clack of keys all over downtown. The city’s Cultural Manager is once again putting together the Word on the Street event; a combination of art, writing, and culture that encourages honesty and thoughtful conversation.
At nine different locations around downtown, a single typewriter will be set up. Each typewriter is a vintage model and does not require any power. Pieces of paper with custom Letterheads are located near the typewriter with a question for the day typed on them. Visitors type out an anonymous answer to the question, which is then left in the typewriter for others to find as they create their own answers. When the sheets are full, they are placed on a clipboard and a new sheet can be put in.
Additionally, each typewriter sits on a small table that has been decorated by a local artist. Each artist was given a theme based on the written word and asked to come up with an original design that would complement the typewriter. The art ranges from homages and murals of authors, to more abstract fare. The intention is that finding and participating in all nine typewriters will take visitors through a journey of a mental, physical, and spiritual nature.
Word on the Street will take place from July 13 to August 2 at various locations. Participation in the event is free to any passerby. For a complete list of locations and addresses, interested parties should visit the website.
