Volcanic comedian coming to Bellingham

A comedian who got his start in science is coming to Bellingham.

Ben Miller is a stand-up comedian from New York City who got his start as a scientist. He earned a degree from Columbia University in Materials Science and Engineering, and worked in several labs, where he did what he described as “fun things” like printing 3D cookies and experimenting with lasers.

He also performed his routine in various clubs around New York and decided to combine his love of comedy with that of science, coming up with a routine that consists mostly of science jokes. His hour-long standup show sold out in 2022 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and led to a tour of more than 50 cities in Europe and across the United States, which also sold out.

Miller served as the Artist in Residence at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park in 2023, the first comedian ever to hold the position. Debate is still ongoing whether this was a good idea, but it gave him a lot of material to work with, including telling jokes while standing in front of a lake of burning lava.

Miller says his family-oriented routine contains jokes about subjects like materials science, medical science, biology, chemistry, volcanology, cats, cookies, physics, and the late Alex Trebek.

The comedian will be at the Mt. Baker Theatre in Bellingham on March 7. The traditional medium for advertising shows like this is with colorful posters, which organizers can find at print shops.
