Bellingham residents who might enjoy learning about some of the history of the bay should plan to listen to an upcoming Zoom event.
The Community Boating Center is hosting a talk about the development of the shores of Bellingham Bay, as well as the coastal and beach restoration projects that have been undertaken around the bay in the last quarter century. Jim Johannessen will discuss topics including improved access to the waterfront, the creation and enhancement of the existing beach, and the enhancement of the estuary to improve habitats near the shore.
He will also talk about the coastal restoration efforts he has designed at Little Squalicum Park, Waypoint Park, Boulevard Park, and Fairhaven's Marine Park, and give participants a look into coastal enhancements being planned for the Cornwall landfill area, the proposed Cornwall Beach Park, and the Salish Sea.
Bellingham's Coastal Geologic Services, which Johannessen has run for nearly three decades, is a specialized consulting firm that tackles projects involving the design and assessment of coastal engineering and coastal geology. He and his firm have seen their designs used in the Port and City of Bellingham and elsewhere.
