STOMP is a celebration of percussion, as a company of eight performers stomps out rhythms using Zippo lighters, garbage cans, brooms, matchboxes, shopping carts, and more. In fact, they use almost everything except traditional percussion instruments.
Lewis Cresswell and Steve McNicholas created STOMP in Brighton, England, in 1991. Cresswell and McNicholas have a long history in alternative theater, dating back to 1981 when they were members of Cliff Hanger, a theatrical group, and Pookiesnackenburger, a street band. The groups appeared at the Edinburgh Festival in the early 1980s.
In 1986, Cresswell and Benjamin Frederick Tin formed what they called a “junkpercussion duo” known as the Urban Warriors. They performed in the streets, and most of their routines consisted of beating each other with sticks. This led to the first iteration of STOMP, which appeared in 1991, and won, among other awards, the “Best of the Fringe” from the Daily Express.
Since then, it has become a worldwide phenomenon, touring frequently, and becoming the subject of a Cinemax film. The Boston Globe wrote:
“If you haven’t seen STOMP, GO! If you have seen it, take someone and share the pleasure!”
STOMP is coming to the Mt. Baker Theater in Bellingham on January 13. A performance like this is often publicized using colorful Posters, which organizers will find at Print shops.
