A Seattle artist is about to hold a release party in Bellingham for his new album.
Damien Jurado's career as a solo artist began during the 1990s, when he began releasing recordings on his own label, Casa Recordings. The songs were folk-based and lo-fi, limited to cassettes only, but they gained him a cult following in the local area. This brought him to the attention of the Sub Pop label, which released “Waters Ave S.,” Jurado's first full album, in 1997. “Rehearsals for Departure,” his second full-length album, dropped in 1999.
Jurado often uses “found sound” in his work. Although other artists have done the same, the technique does not appear to be widely used. Found sounds, as the title suggests, are those made by means other than musical instruments. Some are taken from nature, and others are created by unusual means. Examples include The Dodos, who included a garbage bin in their percussion section, and Joe Nanini, the drummer with Wall of Voodoo, who often used pots and pans rather than drums. In Jurado's case, the found sounds include answering machines and Tape players from thrift stores. Thus far, Jurado has released almost 50 different projects, and the party celebrates the latest album, “What's New, Tomboy?”
