Heaviest of metal bands to appear in Bellingham

A heavy metal band that handles the rough edges of the genre is coming to Bellingham.

Primitive Man’s artists call themselves “Planet earth’s first and only deathsludge™️ band.” Death metal, a variety of heavy metal, features low-tuned guitars that are heavily distorted; atonality; powerful, aggressive drumming; and growling vocals. The themes of this subgenre, which emerged sometime in the 1980s, include religion, violence, and science fiction.

Abrasive and severe, sludge is another subset of heavy metal combining hardcore punk with doom metal. The sound features distorted instruments, vocals that are growled or shouted, and contrasting tempos.

Primitive Man exhibits many of these qualities. The outfit got together in Denver, Colorado, with Ethan Lee McCarthy as the frontman, backed up by drummer Bennet Kennedy and bassist Jonathan Campos. Joe Linden has since replaced Kennedy. They are known for their harsh sound and nihilistic attitude, combining black metal, noise music, and funeral doom. They dropped their latest effort, the EP “Insurmountable,” this year. Events like this give organizers the opportunity to use poster printing to create truly edgy and amazing advertising.

An article described Primitive Man as:

“. . . a trio that are currently making some of the most harrowing, gut wrenchingly heavy sludge under the sun. . . . The band’s thick, oppressive sound just seems to pull you in deeper and deeper, like an ominous aural black hole that slowly Envelopes you.”

Primitive Man will be at The Shakedown on North State Street on June 28.
