Let’s do the “Time Warp” again, only in Bellingham.
A hit show that flopped as a movie but subsequently morphed into a cult classic is coming to Bellingham. The phenomenon began in 1973, when actor Richard O’Brien wrote the book, lyrics, and music for a stage production, “The Rocky Horror Show.” O’Brien was a fan of the B horror movies and science fiction films of the 1950s, and wanted to capture some of their humor, and their “cheesy” feeling. The show opened in 1973 and closed in 1980, after a run of 2,960 performances at various London venues.
In 1975, the stage production was adapted into the film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which received scathing reviews. However, things began changing in 1976 at New York City’s Waverly Theater, where audiences began dressing like the characters, and talking back to the screen. Dedicated fans began dressing in costume and performing the entire film. These “shadow casts” acted beside or in front of the screen, providing their own detailed replicas of the costumes and lip-synching the lines.
A live shadow cast performance is coming to the Mount Baker Theatre. Fans will have a blast, and people who have no idea what the fuss is about can enjoy a cultural phenomenon.
