Bellingham is planning to build a new park in the rapidly-growing Cordata area of the city, and the design was recently revealed, according to an article in the Bellingham Herald.
Cordata Park will comprise 25 acres between Horton and Stuart roads, on Cordata Parkway's east side. Plans call for it to be built in phases, with the first phase to include:
• a picnic shelter
• a bike pump track that will be suitable for use by people of all ages
• a parkour course
• exercise stations for adults
• a playground for children
This phase will also include constructing a spray park where children can cool off on hot days, restrooms, and parking for 79 vehicles, as well as a loop trail. Decorative metal sculptures are also planned. When facilities like this open, officials can use banner printing to celebrate the event.
The Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department's director, Leslie Bryson, said the park is meant to be enjoyed by the entire community. Residents of the Cordata area have been asking for a park for years.
One resident, Julianna Guy, has been working toward getting the city to build a park since 2005, when she put together a committee to protest the area's lack of green space. Today, a small park once known as Cordata Park has been renamed Julianna Park in Guy's honor,
Construction of the first phase, which is estimated at $6.2m, is scheduled to begin in May.
