Celebrated dance company to visit Bellingham

One of the most-celebrated dance companies in the United States will perform in Bellingham.

The Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) was founded by Karel Shook and Arthur Mitchell in 1969, in the midst of the movement for civil rights. The pair believed that great art is born at such times, often giving marginalized communities a way to express themselves.

In 1955, Mitchell made history when he joined the New York City Ballet as its first principal dancer of color. Just before he started DTH, Mitchell was in Brazil assisting in the effort to found the National Ballet of Brazil. He decided to return to his native Harlem to make a difference for dancers of all races by founding a company where they would receive training, experience in performing, and a chance to excel in the world of ballet. Since its inception, the Dance Theatre of Harlem has become one of the most innovative and influential organizations in dance.

A review of the company's performance says the evening:

“. . . showcases DTH for what it is and what it's capable of—a strong, versatile company that offers a message, less tricks, well-rounded technique and powerful theater.”

The company was scheduled to perform in May, 2020, and now will appear on February 10, 2021, at 7.00 pm. The venue is the historic Mount Baker Theatre. Poster printing can be used to create striking Posters to advertise events like this.
