One of the world’s most beloved authors is coming to Bellingham.
Amy Tan will be in the city to give audiences a chance to have “A Conversation with Amy Tan.” Tan was born in the United States to parents who had immigrated from China. Despite being American by birth, Tan was still expected to follow a career path her parents, especially her mother, approved. However, instead of becoming a concert pianist or a doctor, she began writing fiction.
Tan is the author of the celebrated novel “The Joy Luck Club,” which she published in 1989. The book was a finalist for the National Book Awards 1989 for Fiction, and was made into a feature film in 1993, with Tan herself co-writing the screenplay with Ronald Bass.
She has written other best-selling novels including “The Valley of Amazement,” “The Bonesetter’s Daughter,” “The Hundred Secret Senses,” and “The Kitchen God’s Wife.” She has published a memoir and written about the craft of writing.
Tan was also a member of the now-disbanded band the Rock Bottom Remainders, a group that included other published authors such as Stephen King, Dave Barry, and Matt Groening. The group played for charity and gave the more than $1m it raised to literary programs.
Tan will appear at the Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham on Mother’s Day, May 8, at 3:00 pm. Organizers of events like this can use brochure printing to create programs for audiences.
