Bellingham runs into the new year

Bellingham runners have a chance to welcome 2023 with their favorite pastime.

A race is coming up in January that will take participants over a scenic course, as it loops around Lake Samish, just south of Bellingham. This is the 45th Annual Lake Samish Runs and there are two options available – a 6.5 mile and a 13.1 mile, which represent a quarter and half a mile respectively. Those who want to run the 13.1 miles will simply complete the course around the lake twice, with an additional dogleg of 0.1 mile to make up the extra distance.

There are a few simple rules runners need to keep in mind. First, although walkers are allowed, there will be no early start for them, and the course will be closed after three hours, so they should prepare accordingly. There are no dogs allowed, and those running with baby joggers must start at the back. Finally, people should wear bright colors and use only one ear bud so they can hear what is going on around them.

The date of the race is January 15, with the 13.1-mile race starting at 9:30am, and the 6.5-mile race starting at 9:45am. When outdoor events like these are planned, organizers can use banner printing to create course markers.

Registration is open now and anyone who is interested is encouraged to sign up as soon as possible, as the event will be capped at 300 participants, and spots go quickly. Prizes will be awarded in various categories.
