Bellingham retailers to offer enticement to Canadians

The Bellis Fair Mall in Bellingham is planning a cross-border shopping incentive for Canada-based shoppers with an “at par” promotion.

Retailers who are participating in this promotion will accept Canadian dollars for the same value as the American dollar, giving Canadians a discount of up to 25%. An American and Canadian flag will be displayed by these retailers, which might also want to consider using banners with more information about the promotion to further attract customers.

President and CEO of Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism, Loni Rahm, commented that all customers need to be respected and retailers need to be generous during this period. The number of vehicles crossing southbound into this country has dropped from 470,199 in March 2015 to 415,209 in March 2016, which has played a significant role in the economies of communities like Bellingham.

Rahm said the promotion is primarily directed at spontaneous and casual shoppers, who may live further away from the border and make fewer trips south than the core group of shoppers and recreationalists who have closer ties to the United States and the Bellingham area.

The first three-day weekend in Canada, Victoria Day, which is this weekend, is the first time the promotion will be in effect. It will also be used for Labour Day, Canada Day, Remembrance Day, and Thanksgiving.
