Recently, Bellingham's director of environmental programs, Brian Gouran, briefed the city's port commissioners on the projects that will be undertaken soon, or are already in work. It is expected that 2019 will bring in a lot of activity at the waterfront.
Gouran revealed that work at The Annex at the Granary Building is ongoing. The building's exterior is nearly complete, and tenant improvements can be made. The Annex offers 6,000 square feet, and is expected to house retailers and a restaurant. In addition, the interior of the Granary Building now has its first tenant—the Bellingham Yoga Collective will move to the building's third floor in the spring.
Work on Granary Avenue and Laurel Street is ongoing, though the Granary Avenue section of the project is almost complete. However, the road will not open officially until a temporary parking lot is finished, which should be sometime in January. Laurel Street, Gouran said, should open in the spring.
A major residential development, the first in the district, is slated to begin in the spring. The cost of the project is estimated at $32m, and will offer approximately 70 residential units, a parking garage, and a total of about 26,000 square feet of space to be used for retail and commercial enterprises. Since residents are often interested in local development, officials could use flyer printing to update them on current projects like this.
